PT Hutchison 3 Indonesia

PT Hutchison 3 Indonesia was originally established under the name PT Telindo Inti Nusa on March 20, 2000, and later changed its name to PT Cyber Access Communication (CAC). This company is 100% owned by Charoen Pokphand, a Thai conglomerate company (in Indonesia it is better known as a big player in the livestock, breeding, and fisheries industry). PT CAC's efforts to enter the telecommunications industry began when they participated in a 3G tender for the UMTS system held by the government in September 2003 (together with PT Tira Austenite Tbk, PT Astratel Nusantara, PT Surya Waringin Mas, PT Global Media Seluler, and PT Catur Surya Lestari). ). On October 9, 2003, PT CAC was determined as the sole winner in the tender, so it is expected to be the first operator to use this technology.

However, not yet operating, on May 9, 2005, Charoen and Hutchison Asia Telecom Group agreed to an agreement to sell 60% of Charoen's shares in PT CAC to Hutchison Telecom. Meanwhile, Charoen will retain the remaining 40% stake. Although there were rumors that Hutchison would delay this transaction (and had sparked controversy due to government opposition), in the end, the sale and purchase were completed at the end of July 2005 at a price of US$ 120 million. In the transaction, the two parties agreed to develop their joint cellular operator by providing funds of US$ 300 million, with the control of Hutchison. In 2006, the company name was changed to PT Hutchison CP Telecommunications (HCPT), and the management themselves stated that they were ready to launch their services that year. However, it was not until March 29, 2007, that the company's 3G service (named 3 or Tri) was launched with a limited coverage area initially in Jakarta.

Tri then expanded rapidly, and by July 2007, the company had operated in 67 cities in Java-Bali and expanded its operations in August 2007 to Sumatra island and to Kalimantan and Sulawesi at the end of 2008. To help develop its network, Tri collaborated with several companies such as Siemens (BTS development), Nokia (network), and Converge Mbt (dealing system). At that time, Tri had gained 2.3 million subscribers by the second quarter of 2008. On September 8, 2008, Tri promoted free SMS to all operators, everyone, and by the end of that year, Tri had 6,300 BTS (and targeted to add 2,700 more BTS). ). In 2009, Tri became one of the sponsors of Manchester United's Asia tour, and finally became one of the official sponsors of Manchester United.

In February 2013, Garibaldi Thohir in cooperation with Northstar Pacific (a company owned by Patrick Sugito Walujo and Glenn Sugita and affiliated with TPG Capital) bought a 35% stake owned by Charoen Pokphand Group in PT Hutchison CP Indonesia. In the transaction that has been circulating since September 2012, Hutchison's shares also underwent a change by increasing to 65% (by buying 5% of Charoen Pokphand's shares). With the change in share ownership, the company name PT Hutchison CP Telecommunications (HCPT) was changed to PT Hutchison 3 Indonesia on April 10, 2013. This 65-35% share ownership structure lasted until April 2019, when through the injection process, share ownership became 66 -33%. Tri is one of Hutchison's largest business units, accounting for 64% of its customers in Asia.

In accordance with its commitment, Tri has made various efforts to strengthen and expand its network to provide maximum telecommunications services to the community. On March 30, 2016, Tri launched a 4G LTE network in Batam, Makassar, Pontianak, Jakarta, Bandung, and Denpasar. Then, Tri participated in a 5G auction held by the government and came out as one of the winners in block B, 2.3 GHz frequency on December 18, 2020. This is Tri's effort to continue to strengthen and expand its network. However, on January 25, 2021, the Ministry of Communication and Information canceled the auction results.

However, throughout the operation of Hutchison's business unit in Indonesia, it has included a range of small-medium operators, with most of them being in the fourth position as the largest operator based on the number of subscribers. As of June 30, 2012, Hutchison 3 has had 21 million subscribers and has a market share of up to 10%. Although in 2016 it was in the third position (above XL) with 56.5 million subscribers,[20] in 2019 Tri is again in the fourth position with 30 million users.[21] According to Tri, with the COVID-19 pandemic, users have now increased 1.4 times (from 2019), although it is not explained how big the growth is. In addition, in 2020, Tri stated that they already have 44,000 4.5G BTS and plan to add 6,000 more throughout Indonesia.
